The Who, Keith Moon’s House, 1971 by Alec Byrne

Nearly half a century ago, Alec found himself making the hour-long drive out to Keith Moon’s new house in Chertsey where the Who were hosting a press party to promote the imminent release of their masterpiece Who’s Next. Wrangling the band for photos was not easy, remembers Alec: "You'd think you'd gotten them together and then 'Oh, where's Keith?' Then you'd find Keith and Roger had wandered off somewhere. Eventually we corralled them but it was hard-won.” There were some other nice shots that day: like a quirky color image of what appears to be the band waking up from a nap on Keith’s lawn. (Alec also made a quick sneak into Keith’s house and grabbed a few images of the rock star’s lair: Massive 360 degree party sofa? Check! Ashtrays? Check! A couple of Pete’s Hiwatt amplifiers? Check!) Just 22 at the time, Alec eventually managed to get one of his favorite photos of the Who that afternoon, all four staring down the lens of his Nikon for what seems to be a private portrait session, but was actually a chaotic gaggle with a dozen photographers jockeying for position and attention. “Sometimes you get lucky.” The house, known as “Tara,” was demolished in 1990.
